Your Ideal Customer Profile decides every downstream step of the pipeline. Get this right and everything else gets easier.

What an ICP is (and isn't)

An ICP is a structured description of the type of company and person you want to reach. It is not a buyer persona, target list, or marketing tagline. It is a set of dimensions the lead-discovery engine uses to filter the universe of companies down to those most likely to buy from you.

A good ICP has five dimensions:

  1. Target persona — title, seniority, function (e.g., "VP of Engineering at a Series A-C SaaS company")
  2. Firmographics — company size, industry, revenue range, geography
  3. Pain points — what problem you solve, in their language
  4. Value props — what they get from you, ranked by what matters most to them
  5. Disqualifiers — what makes a lead a bad fit (e.g., "not interested in companies under 20 employees")

How Defrost uses your ICP

The market strategist agent reads your website + ICP at the start of each campaign and produces a refined ICP snapshot. Then:

  • Lead discovery uses firmographics + persona from your ICP to source matching contacts via public data sources
  • Email verification filters out invalid emails before they hit your sender
  • Company research enriches each company with funding, news, and tech stack — but only for companies that match the ICP
  • Copy generation writes templates that speak to the ICP's pain points using your value props
  • Personalization tailors each email using both the ICP framework and the per-lead research

If your ICP is vague, every downstream step is vague. If your ICP is sharp, the leads are sharp, the copy is sharp, the responses are sharper.

How to write a good ICP

Use specific words. "B2B SaaS" is bad. "Cloud cost management SaaS, $5M-$50M ARR, multi-cloud (AWS + GCP), product-led growth motion" is good.

Use real evidence. If you've closed deals before, list the names. Defrost will use those to pattern-match.

Pick a primary persona. You can target multiple titles (e.g., VP Eng + Director of Platform), but list them in priority order. The pipeline will weight the first more.

Be ruthless about disqualifiers. The fastest path to a high reply rate is removing wrong-fit leads before you spend time writing to them.

Where to edit your ICP

  • Workspace ICP — Settings → Workspace → Business profile. This is the canonical version that ships into new campaigns.
  • Campaign ICP overrides — inside the new-campaign wizard at step 2. These overrides do NOT change the workspace ICP; they snapshot at launch.
